How old can I be to go on expedition?

You need to be aged between 15 – 17 at the time of travel. We only take minors (i.e. under 18).

How will I raise the funds?

You are not alone in being concerned about this. We have a helpful Raising the Funds guide to download packed full of ideas. Most of the students who travel with us raise most of the money themselves. It can be done. #DreamBelieveDo

Do I need a visa?

We advise that you seek independent advice from the Foreign Office on what the visa requirements for the country you are travelling to are. They have a travel advice section. We don’t give out specific advice as each case is different depending on your nationality.
In order to enter South Africa as an unaccompanied minor the South African government require you to provide a Parental Consent Affidavit document. Should there be any under 18s in your group, we will guide you through the process and provide the required documents to fill out.

What is the accommodation like?

This depends on where you are going. More information can be found on the specific destination pages about the accommodation you should expect. It might not be palatial, but it will be comfortable.

What about phone charging and roaming?

If you can manage without your mobile phone it would be ideal, however, for those that can’t do without make sure that you are aware of the roaming feature, the charges that apply. If in doubt check with your provider prior to departure. There will be the odd opportunity for charging; however, not predictable.

How much spending money should I take with me?

You will only need a small amount of money for a few souvenirs, everything else in included in the overall cost.

How do I join an Open expedition?

You simply need to contact us to let us know where you would like to go and which year you would like to travel. We will then send you a booking information pack and form to fill out. We will then ask for a small holding deposit of £100.

What vaccinations do I need?

You will receive a letter from our medical advisor about vaccinations. For further advice please contact your GP, travel health practice or the National Travel Health Network and Centre.

Will I be able to shower?

Certainly! We don’t want you to smell. The showers on our expeditions may be a little more basic than the one you have a home but there is plenty of hot water (solar powered of course).

What will the food be like?

We pride ourselves on providing home cooked, nutritious food that caters for all dietary requirements.

Is there Wifi?

WiFi is limited and intermittent with regular power-cuts.

How many other people will be in my group?

There will be a maximum of 20 in your group.

How physically demanding will the expedition be?

The expedition will be active. You don’t not need to be able to run a marathon but should be fit enough to be on your feet all day (having a fun time might we add!).

Is there a payment plan?

Yes. There is a staggered payment plan spread out over the time before you travel so you can raise the funds as you go. This can be adapted if needs be in consultation with us, so please do ask if you are concerned about this.

What if I need medication?

If you need to take any prescription medication with you, please obtain a letter from your GP on headed paper stating what you need and why. Please only take what you need for the duration of the trip. It will be virtually impossible to replenish once in South Africa. This should be stated on your medical questionnaire.

What equipment do I need?

We will issue you with a full kit list nearer the time. We’ve had years of experience at this so we won’t get you taking anything unnecessary that will weigh you down.

What if I have an allergy?

Allergy you say…no problem. Just let us know on the booking form what allergies you have, and we will work our magic.

What will the weather be like?

You will be visiting in the South African winter. The grass is brown, and the temperature varies from 22 -24°C. In KwaZulu-Natal the nights can be very cold, and it may rain! See the kit for further detail.

Will I get the chance to buy any souvenirs?

Yes, you’ll get the chance to buy some local souvenirs.
